Todo cambia, no obstante, cuando conoce a Alessia, una chica que está convencida de que él es el héroe del manga Jeeg Steel.

¿Qué es un héroe? Un individuo dotado de un gran talento y un coraje extraordinario que elige el bien sobre el mal. Que se sacrifica por otros, y sobre todo, que tiene mucho que perder, y nada que ganar. Es la definición que nos da Gabriele Mainetti de un superhéroe, su superhéroe Enzo - Hiroshi Shiba. Me pregunto, ¿acaso con esto me voy a creer que estoy ante el antihéroe italiano o por lo menos ante un filme políticamente incorrecto, como se promocionó en el pasado Festival de Sitges? Pues no, pero yo no lo sabía. Y no la considero mala, pero no es lo que yo habría querido ver. Menos ahora que en meses no he escrito una reseña y en meses no he visto una película “diferente” que pudiese tratar acá. ¡Lástima! Y como otra veces, difiero un poco/mucho de la crítica… no sé cómo es que ganó el Premio a Mejor Película en la Sección Òrbita en Sitges, y 7 premios de 16 nominaciones de los Premios Donatello del mismo año, superando a su competidora Youth - La giovinezza (2015) de Sorrentino. No estoy tan familiarizado con aquel festival pero si me llama la atención.

“Italia finalmente tiene su propio superhéroe”. Manietti toma el concepto del superhéroe de la industria norteamericana para construir su historia, inspirando a su protagonista y enferma compañera en el personaje de Gō Nagai, Kotetsu Jeeg (dicen, un anime popular en Italia por ahí de los 90s… algo así como Mazinger Z en México). Cual Vengador Tóxico, la historia parte con Enzo (misántropo ladrón de al menos 40 años) perseguido en las calles de Roma por la policía, y obligado a esconderse en las aguas del río Tíber colmadas de desechos tóxicos, que por supuesto, serán la fuente de sus poderes otorgándole fuerza sobrehumana. Sin embargo estamos ante un ladro bastante simple, sin ambiciones personales, no muy inteligente, asocial y adicto al porno y al yogurt. ¿Qué podemos esperar de Enzo? Aun sin tener conocimiento de sus habilidades y en busca de dinero fácil se alía con su vecino en un negocio de la mafia, el cual sale mal, y no sólo mal, sino también será la oportunidad para descubrir sus súper poderes, y como dijo el Tío Ben: Un gran poder conlleva una gran responsabilidad. Sin desearlo y sin buscarlo (lo he dicho, sólo piensa en él y su simplicidad alejada de lujos y repleta de yogurt y porno) se involucra con Fabio, el líder de una de las células de la mafia napolitana, un hombre violento y sediento de fama. Un psicópata y supervillano en potencia; al defender a Alessia (una chica mentalmente discapacitada), su futuro amor, de las manos de Fabio, quien exige, para pagar sus deudas, la cocaína que debía recuperar el padre de Alessia. 

De este modo, una vez más, una persona común es arrastrada y obligada a ser un superhéroe por las circunstancias. Reconociendo la responsabilidad que conlleva tener una gran poder. En contraste, la típica psicopatía del villano. Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot no falla como tal. Su problema radica en las promesas que nos hace a través de su discurso y deseo de crear un héroe que refleje las calles de Roma, sólo una perorata cuando lo comparamos (sin quererlo) con otros antihéroes desde Frank Castle a El Comediante, y películas como Kick-Ass o Super, ambas del 2010. No sé a quién se le ocurren las palabras “políticamente incorrecto” para definir la película de Mainetti. Nos encontramos con el tema de las drogas, por ahí un transexual, la caricaturización del porno y la parodia de una sociedad atemorizada por el terrorismo, ah, y la sugerencia de abuso sexual… sí, pero a dosis muy reservadas y moralistas, de verdad. De modo que la violencia no resulta tan divertida, ni el humor tan ácido, sórdido o audaz. Creo yo, que más bien es una película muy correcta, y que fácil le sobran 30 minutos (al menos el final predecible pero decente). 

En fin. Después de todo, un buen debut de Mainetti quien comenta en entrevista lo mucho que le costó (por años) su financiamiento. Los efectos especiales de malos a moderadamente malos resultan tolerables. Y de apreciarse entre sus mejores puntos la fotografía realista y oscura, sirviéndose del grano y en general, aunque a veces amateur, un buen uso de las cámaras. 

Se hablaba del primer héroe italiano, ¿y qué pasa con Superargo, el hombre enmascarado de 1966? La respuesta de Italia al Santo, el enmascarado de plata, y los otros héroes italianos de los sesentas, Flashman o Goldface. O Il ragazzo invisibile (2014) de Gabriele Salvatores que no sólo nos habla del nacimiento de un superhéroe sino de toda una agencia de personas con habilidades sobrehumanas… de hecho creo que Jeeg Robot es más cercano a la película de Salvatores, por su mensaje… y eso que Il ragazzo invisibile es protagonizada por niños y políticamente correcta; porque a los antihéroes delirantes y bizarros del Cine Serie B y a aquellos norteamericanos de oscuro pasado y proceder, les queda muy lejos.
